Jewish heritage of the Silk Road

Two thousand years of Bukharan Jewish history: synagogues, quarters, cemeteries and the families who keep the memory alive.

Jewish communities lived along the Silk Road for centuries, and Bukharan Jews developed their own language, music and traditions. Our heritage programmes visit the synagogues and quarters of Bukhara and Samarkand, the old cemeteries, and meet members of the community where possible. We can arrange kosher meals and plan around Shabbat and the holidays.

  • The Bukhara synagogue and Jewish quarter
  • Samarkand's Jewish quarter and cemetery
  • Kosher meals on request
  • Guides who know the community
